Common Sidewalk Problems in NYC (and How to Fix Them)
The most common sidewalk defects in NYC neighborhoods and the right fix for each.
Tree root damage: cut roots, install root barrier, replace flags. Don't just grind — it returns.
Cracking: anything wider than ½ inch is a DOT violation. Replace, don't patch.
Sunken flags: usually a sub-base failure. Re-compact and re-pour.
Trip hazards: ½-inch lip or more triggers liability and a DOT NOV.
